French or Spanish?
THe time is already near when students in 6th grade will be switching languages. So, whatever they have done in one language will now be pretty much repeated in the other language. Then in January, everyone in 6th grade has a chance to decide if they want to take French or Spanish for the rest of their time in middle school.
Many of my 6th grade students have already declared “I’m taking French!” or “I’m definitely taking Spanish” though they haven’t taken Spanish yet. Let’s wait until you’ve had a full experience in Spanish before you decide for sure.
For my 7th and 8th grade students, and those of you who aren’t my students but love French, what are some of the reasons you take French?

I took French because I thought I would use it more, it was more interesting and challenging and more related to me because I am related to French people. I also have a friend from Québec whose my penpal so french helps me understand her.

I chose French in 6th grade because I liked the class better even though I really enjoyed Spanish. I thought French was faster moving and more challenging than Spanish, I really liked Mlle. Watson (and I still do!), and I liked the language better. In the summer before 6th grade, I had traveled to France, Germany, and Switzerland and the only language that I actually knew was a little bit of German and that was my favorite. My French was nonexistent at that point. By the end of 6th grade I was an adoring fan of French (I IM in French, put Facebook updates in French, email in French, blog in French, accidentally start writing in French on homework and then have to erase, and talk in French)…..

Ellie and twilightgirl112: I love that you both mention that you love the sound of French. One of my favorite things about French is that it flows and sounds so smooth. It’s not one of those languages where I feel like someone is attacking me. It sounds so pretty> I’m glad other people can hear that too!
October 30th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
I agree about the sound of French. After learning French I do not want to speak English because it is not anywhere near as pretty as French. Also now when I am speaking in English I feel the need to clarify whether I am using direct or a general “you” (because in French everything is very clear, it is either tu or vous).

Some reasons I like french:
- it sounded like more of a challenge!
- it sounds really cool when you speak french!
- theres more I can’t think of right now!
PICK FRENCH!

I myself choose french ’cause i thought it would be an awesome language to learn! it’s really really really really*100000000 times fun and a million times cool! Also as they said above me, it sounds very pretty and sometimes it’s easy to learn, though sometimes it may be a bit difficult, but it’s we’ll worth it. And the class has the coolest teacher ever! And you may get to go to Quebec in either 7th or 8th grade, and let me tell you, it’s an amazing opportunity! And also you do plenty of fun things in class too!!! So those are only some of the reasons why you should chose french, and why I chose it.

I also thought french was more interesting, I also want to visit france one day so I’ll need to learn the language. I thought french was also more fun to learn than spanish.

What caught my interest in french was the Quebec trip. I thought it’d be an interesting experience, along with my interest in the country and it’s people. I love the way french flows so nicely..I haven’t gotten to that point yet where i can speak fluently myself, but when fluent french people speak it, it sounds amazing! French is very difficult, c’est difficile, although it can be a fun language to learn. I highly recommend taking french!

I picked french because i found it really interesting to see the amount of people speaking it fluently. I love the way it flows, and it’s such a beautiful language. It was very fun for me to learn it, and see all the differences and similiarties it has to English! The quebec trip did help haha, but I actually picked french because I liked it. =]

As an 8th grader i took French because i thought it would be more challenging language, and I’ve always wanted to travel to Europe, and by taking French i could have a better understanding of it if i ever go there.
November 4th, 2009 at 5:36 pm
I took French becuase i persionaly have travled to Cananda many times , and i am going to travel many , many more in my lifetime. And sience Cananda is a French speaking country , i thought i would be better if i could understand what everything says, rather then just taking a guess.
November 4th, 2009 at 9:09 pm
I chose french because some people in my family know it, and because I just found that I defiantly enjoyed it and it was very interesting. I also chose french because I would like to visit France. I also think that France is a cool country with its interesting history. French tends to flow more than spanish and makes more sense to me. I do not regret choosing french and enjoy learning it, and speaking it.

bonjour madam Watson if i had 2 pick between French or Spanish i think i would definitely choose French i love French and i have always wanted to speak it. last year three girls for Mattacheese Leah brook and Courtney came to m.e.s. and tought my class how to speak french i loved it and now learning more and more things make me love it so much.
November 5th, 2009 at 11:24 pm
I decided to take French, because I love the flow when you speak and it’s a beautiful language. Another reason why I decided to take French was, I have always dreamed of going Europe and by taking French it wold help me out a lot, when I get to go there. I would have to say for all you 6th graders who can’t decide which language to take, I would go with French, yes it may be hard to learn at first but you start to get the hang of it’s actually an okay language to go with.
November 7th, 2009 at 12:39 pm
I chose french because my family is frenchcanadian or whatever it is and my grandpa tlaks french with his family.

Here are some reasons i took french:
1.) it would be good for me to learn a new language.
2.) i love how the language is so romantic
3.) i know english, portuguese, and when you know the second language that i listed its very easy to understand what they are saying most of time i would like to learn french if i all ready know spanish.
4.) and lastly, my dad travels all around the world and i have to well parts its good for me to learn french because pretty soon ill get to go to france one day. i might go back to holland again and see my grandparents, we’ll probabley might go to france but then again i don’t want go ahead of myself.
November 18th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
It’s hard to decide if I want to take French or Spanish! Spanish is an easy language to speak, but French is more challenging, and I’m up for a challenge! It’s a 50% Spanish 50% French.
